Pediatric Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies are something that no one ever wants to face. Of course, when this does happen, it can be an extremely difficult situation as you will not have the proper time allotted to fix the issue. Pediatric dental emergencies, in more ways than one, can seem like an even tougher challenge. When it comes to the healthcare of your child, it is difficult for you as a parent or guardian to ascertain what extent of danger your child is in.
The team at Capstone Kids Pediatric Dentistry is proud to offer pediatric dental emergency services that will help put your mind at ease and resolve the situation, no matter the urgency or problem.
What is a Pediatric Dental Emergency?
A pediatric dental emergency is similar to any dental emergency but is related to the pain, discomfort, injury, or danger that your infant, child, or teeth may be in. Of course, the younger the child – the more anxiety that you and your family may feel at the time. A dental emergency is anything that is causing so much pain or discomfort that it has become unbearable or an extremely dangerous and delicate situation that cannot wait before it becomes a threatening issue.
What are Some Common Types of Emergencies?
The team at Capstone Kids Pediatric Dentistry is well-versed in many dental emergencies, especially those that are common to children. The question becomes, how do you know whether something constitutes an emergency? In addition to the list below, it is important to note that it is always better to be safe than sorry. If your child is young, and cannot communicate how they feel or the danger they are in – this is usually a tell-tale sign that a professional service may be required. Here are some common dental emergencies that are common in children.
Fractured, Loose, and Chipped Tooth
This is common among children that are young but have most of their baby teeth grown in. The enamel and strength of the tooth can be compromised, and rough play can sometimes chip or fracture the tooth. If this occurs, it is best to immediately rinse your child’s mouth with warm water and apply a compress to reduce the swelling. Save the fractured component, if possible, and give us a call.
Toothache
A toothache can be caused for any number of reasons, and it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what the issue is. The best thing to do in this situation is pain management, and to contact our professional team right away. Remember to opt for cold compresses and treat for shock rather than apply heat or pain medication, as it may interfere with the health of the gums.
Foreign Object Caught in Teeth or Gum
Children use all available senses to interpret the world around them. Before their senses of hearing and sight are more advanced, their taste and touch lead the way. While this is a great way for them to explore, it can also cause unwanted issues – such as having an object lodged in their teeth. Give us a call immediately and, if possible, attempt to remove the object with dental floss. Do not try to pick at it with any wood, metal, or plastic device.
